چکیده

Glasses in lead-iron phosphate (LIP) system loaded with simulated nuclear waste, were melted in the temperature range750-950oC. Some of the LIP glasses were mixed with uranium salt. The pH determinations of the leachate solution at normal temperature show some interesting trends. Leaching study of these glasses with a maximum time period of 300 hrs. were conducted under Soxhlet distillation condition with distilled water. Weight losses and residual activities by ‘Radiotracer technique’ were followed with respect to cumulative time period of leaching. For some LIP-glass samples containing uranium the leach rates as calculated from BET surface area measurements. They were in the range 8.2 x 10–4 to 1.8 x 10–3 g.m-2.hr-1 at 90°C. DTA endotherms occur at ~400oC and ~900oC for the LIP glasses. FTIR studies show absorptions at ~532, ~1025, ~1620-1640, ~2365 and ~3440-3490 cm–1. SEM of some selected glasses was reported. The variation of different properties was explained in terms of the changes in the ionic potentials of the different modifier ions. The model structure of glasses has been considered taking the dual role of Fe3+/2+ and Pb2+ as glass formers/ modifiers which ultimately has an effect on the chemical durability of these glasses.

Immobilization of Simulated High Level Nuclear Wastes with Li2O-CeO2-Fe2O3-P2O5 Glasses

The leaching behavior and structure of Li2O-CeO2Fe2O3-P2O5 glasses incorporated with simulated high level nuclear wastes (HLW) were studied. The leach rates of gross and each constituent element were determined from the total weight loss of the specimen and the leachate analyses by inductively coupled argon plasma spectroscopy (ICP). The gross leach rate of the 4.5Li2O9.7CeO2-34.7Fe2O3-51.5P2O5...

Investigation of the required thickness of thorium spent fuel lead transport cask depending on different fuel burnups and cooling times

Thorium fuels have attracted researcher’s attention due to the reduction of uranium deposits in the world, more abundances than uranium, and the ability to be breeding in thermal and fast reactors. This study aimed to investigate the radiation safety and the amount of necessary shielding for the transportation of spent thorium fuel in the Tehran Research Reactor. The ORIGEN and MCNPX computatio...

A NEW GENERATION OF OXYNITRIDE GLASSES CONTAINING FLUORINE

Oxynitride glasses are found as grain boundary phases in silicon nitride ceramics. They are effectively alumino-silicate glasses in which nitrogen substitutes for oxygen in the glass network, and this causes increases in glass transition and softening temperatures, viscosities (by two to three orders of magnitude), elastic moduli and microhardness. Calcium silicate-based glasses containing fluo...
